Medical negligence cases are not as common in Cyprus as in other jurisdictions such as the UK and the USA. Cypriot Courts are often not willing to award claimants high amounts of compensation. Troika praised Cyprus on Tuesday for its fiscal reform programme. The international lenders from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund stated that Cyprus has made significant progress. This was the third assessment of the progress of Cyprus in relation to the three year adjustment programme.

President Nicos Anastasiades  is back in Cyprus after a three-day visit to Qatar. The President accompanied by a strong delegation of well known businessmen went to Qatar seeking to bring investments to Cyprus.

A historical agreement was signed on January 15 in London by the Foreign Minister of Cyprus Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides and the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom Mr. William Hague. The agreement will allow the Cypriot Government to grant authorizations for the development of private properties within the British bases on Cyprus. Prior consent from the Authorities of the British bases will be required.

A double taxation agreement between Cyprus and Estonia was signed on October 15th 2012 and the agreement was approved by the Estonian Parliament on September 25th 2013. The Cyprus government ratified the agreement in February 2013.

The Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Cyprus (BoC) announced on the 30th of July that the Bank of Cyprus has been fully recapitalised by the overall conversion of 47,5% of uninsured deposits into shares in the bank. That was the final stage of the bank’s resolution process and the announcement said there will be no further measures under the Resolution Law.
